Overall crime in Rockledge trends downward through first quarter, police say

Rockledge Chief of Police John Gallagher announced that overall crime in the borough decreased between January 1 and April 30, 2024.

According to the department’s review, theft was down by 25 percent with no motor vehicle thefts, frauds decreased by 43 percent and criminal mischief (vandalism, graffiti, etc.) dropped by 85 percent.

“There were neither robberies, nor aggravated assaults reported to the police during that period, and there was only one burglary reported and it was a domestic-related incident,” Gallagher wrote. “Most importantly, there was zero murders and rapes. This is all great news for our community!”

The message noted that police presence concurrently increased with 1,516 officer-initiated foot patrols. Vacant home checks went up by 285 percent, bar checks by 506 percent, traffic citations by 108 percent and school bus details by 143 percent.

“I firmly believe that there’s a strong correlation between police performance and crime. Increase police presence and officer activity and crime with decrease. Our municipality is an example of exactly that,” Gallagher wrote.
