On January 2, 2005, Bishop McDevitt’s renovated gym was dedicated to the memory of Ryan McGinty, class of ’05, notes a Friends of Bishop McDevitt Facebook post.

The post said that Ryan was a Lancer football and basketball player who died in April 2003 after a heroic fight against Large T-Cell Lymphoma.

“The McGinty family via the Ryan McGinty Memorial Foundation raised more than $170,000 for improvements to the gym, most notably a brand new hardwood floor that was named The Ryan McGinty Court at Bishop McDevitt,” the post said.

Ryan’s parents and siblings went to midcourt to bounce his practice basketball one time apiece. His father, Jim, went first, followed by brother Jim, sister Erin and mom Marianne. This ball was then placed at the gym entrance where it remained until the school closed. We are happy to say the McGinty family was able to take possession of their son Ryan’s basketball before McDevitt closed.

All McDevitt basketball uniforms had the #55 on the back in memory of Ryan.

Friends of Bishop McDevitt is working to make sure that the McGinty family gets this part of their gym floor when Arcadia University, who has purchased the school, renovates the gym space.
