Mr. Carl Hjalmar Asplundh, Jr., longtime chairman of Asplundh Tree Expert, has passed away

Mr. Carl Hjalmar Asplundh, Jr., a Bryn Athyn resident and third son of Asplundh Tree Expert co-founder Carl Hj. Asplundh Sr., passed away at his home on Friday, March 7. He was 89.

At age 18 he began working for the family company on summer crews and served in the U.S. Army for two years, after which he returned to the company full time, his obituary said.

Mr. Asplundh spent 47 years with the Glenside-born company, eventually becoming the Chairman of the Board of Directors and retiring in 2000. During his career, he supported local community organizations, including public schools and Abington Hospital, with time and financial support.

During the last three years of his life he played a major role in the planning and construction of the new Bryn Athyn Elementary School building, his obituary said.

Relatives, friends and business associates are invited to the funeral service on Saturday, March 29 at the Bryn Athyn Cathedral, 900 Cathedral Road, Bryn Athyn. Music begins at 3:30pm with the service at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Asplundh Cancer Pavilion, P.O. Box 3, Abington, PA 19001. A private reception will follow the service.
