Local officials honored the life and legacy of life member Martha “Molly” McDonough on Saturday, April 18 at Bryn Athyn Cathedral. McDonough passed away on Wednesday, March 18 at the age of 97, according to her obituary.
Fetters Mill Fire Rescue described McDonough as “a beloved member of our Bryn Athyn station and a true trailblazer in our organization.” Their post noted that she served as the first female member of the Bryn Athyn Fire Company as a radio operator and fire police officer.
McDonough also served her community as a crossing guard as well as the Director Emeriti for the Old York Road Historical Society of Jenkintown.
From Fetters Mill Fire Rescue’s post:
Born in Bryn Athyn in 1929, Molly remained a lifelong part of the community she loved. A graduate of ANC High School’s first post–World War II class in 1946, she went on to build a life centered around family, resilience, and service. In 1979, Molly made history as the first female member of the Bryn Athyn Fire Company, serving proudly as a radio operator and fire police officer. Her dedication helped pave the way for generations to follow.
Beyond the fire service, many in the community will remember Molly as a familiar and friendly crossing guard, a role she carried out with pride and commitment for many years.
Molly faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength, including the loss of her husband at a young age and, more recently, her youngest son in 2025. She is survived by her children, Kathy and Kevin, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
More than 20 members of Fetters Mill Fire Rescue, from both Bryn Athyn and Huntingdon Valley, attended her memorial service to pay their respects—just one reflection of the lasting impact she had on so many.
Her legacy of service, strength, and community will not be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Molly.
