Glenside native and Congressmember Madeleine Dean spoke during a gun violence awareness rally on Friday, June 2 on the steps of the Montgomery County Courthouse.

Participants of the rally, which coincided with National Gun Violence Awareness Day, wore orange and carried signs that advocated for “commonsense” gun control legislation.

Speakers demanded the banning of assault-style weapons, the enacting of universal background checks, and the implementation of “red flag” laws. CeaseFirePa officials said 284 Pennsylvanians have been killed and 858 have been injured by gun violence so far this year.

“We have to stop this insanity. It’s a start but it’s not nearly enough. We have to ban assault rifles. We have to strengthen background checks,” Dean said.
