The Lower Moreland Police Department recently shared its school bus safety “Traffic Safety Tip of the Month” for August.
From their alert:
As the new school year inches closer, motorists need to be vigilant to avoid potentially tragic crashes and strong penalties as school buses return to the roads and transport children. Students are also exposed to traffic while waiting for buses or walking to the bus stop or school.
Motorists are reminded to be cautious and alert when approaching a school bus stop and to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks. In addition to watching for school buses, motorists should be alert in school zones, which become hubs of vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Motorists are required to slow down to the posted speed limit of 15 mph in school zones. The following are some quick points to remember when schools open in a few weeks.
- Recognize school zones.
- Reduce your speed when travelling through school zones.
- Expect increased traffic in and around school zones.
- Be aware of an unusually high concentration of pedestrian crosswalks in school zones.
- Be on the lookout for buses.
- Obey crossing guards, traffic officers, and police officers.
- School zone speed violations can result in a significant fine and points assigned to your license.
