Shane Cohen, a 2019 graduate of Lower Moreland High School and a graduate student at the University of Virginia, took home his first major title in the 800m race on Friday at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championship.
Cohen, a senior transfer from the University of Tampa where he had a personal best of 1:48.25 from 2022, ran a 1:44.97.
“I, again, just kind of trusted my instincts and moved when I thought I was going to make it all the way through the strong kick,” Cohen said. “Ended up just being able to finish it out for sure.”

According to the University of Virginia, Olympic trials may be on the horizon for Cohen in the coming weeks, as he plans to stick around and continue to improve his time.
“I was only a 1:48 guy after last year so, honestly, I have no idea how it works,” Cohen said of the trials. “I haven’t even talked to my coaches about it. It was more … NCAA is business. I wanted to take care of business here.”
During his senior season at Lower Moreland, he finished third in the PIAA 3A 400m Championship with a 49.64. He was also a standout basketball player.
