Rachel Magerman, a 2009 Germantown Academy graduate (above right), Bret Gold, a 1978 graduate of Lower Moreland High School, and Mike Sielski, a Dresher native, Upper Dublin School graduate, and longtime Philadelphia Inquirer columnist and author (above left), will be inducted into the Philadelphia Jewish Sports Hall of Fame on September 18 at Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia.
Magerman’s field hockey career includes winning an NCAA championship at North Carolina as well as winning a bronze medal at the Maccabi games in Argentina and Israel. Before being inducted into Germantown Academy’s Hall of Fame in 2016, she led the Patriots’ field hockey team to Inter-Ac League titles in 2005 and 2006 and was named the GA-PC Day Field Hockey MVP in 2006.
“I’ve always been proudly Jewish,” Magerman told the Jewish Exponent. “Given the timing of this, it makes it more special. There’s a lot of antisemitism. The fact I can be recognized and, despite potential consequences, proudly wear my Jewish star and be identified with so many great Jewish athletes is special to me. People don’t realize there are a lot of stereotypes about Jewish athletes. I like helping to break that stereotype.”
Gold, who played football, basketball, and baseball at Lower Moreland High and went to become a member of La Salle University’s baseball team, will receive the Spirit honor. Sielski—who is the organization’s first inductee who isn’t Jewish—is the Hall of Fame’s “Ally on the Court,” according to the Exponent.
