Local police pay tribute to critically wounded officer recovering at Moss Rehab

On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 23, local police paid tribute to Detective Kyle Gilmartin of the Scranton Police Department.

On January 11 during an investigation in West Scranton, a suspect walked up to an unmarked police sedan and fired five rounds from point-blank range, shooting Gilmartin twice in the head, the Scranton Times reported.

Governor Josh Shapiro visited Gilmartin at the hospital and said that while he has a long recovery ahead, he was doing great and “has a hell of a spirit.”

According to Jenkintown police, officers from Jenkintown, Abington, Cheltenham, Hatboro, Horsham, Jenkintown, Lower Moreland, Rockledge, Springfield, Upper Dublin, Upper Moreland, and Whitemarsh Township police departments “escorted and lined the entrance/driveway to Moss Rehabilitation Hospital, in order to salute a hero.”

He will be rehabilitating at the Elkins Park facility for the next few months.

“He has a very positive prognosis and we wish him well as he recovers from this traumatic incident. Please keep Det. Gilmartin and his young family in your thoughts and prayers as he continues to heal,” Jenkintown police’s post said.
