Cheltenham Township officials discussed multiple construction projects during the Public Works Committee meeting on Wednesday, February 5.
Laurel Avenue Bridge Superstructure Replacement Project
According to Lauren Walter, the township’s public information officer, the board of commissioners will be voting to award the design and engineering contract for this project to replace the Laurel Avenue bridge over the creek.
“The timeline would probably be next year, but because the design phase is early in the project, the scope of the work and detours have not been set yet,” Walter told Glenside Local. “The Township was awarded grant funds for the project at a cost of $1.6M, but we will not have the final cost until it goes out to bid.”
According to the meeting agenda, the Public Works Committee considered recommending the board of commissioners to approve a contract to Bowman on a lump sum basis in the amount of $328,000 for design, engineering and construction services.
Chelten Hills Drive Pedestrian Improvements Project
The project is intended to improve pedestrian safety and is currently in the design phase. The full scope and timeline are unknown at this time, Walter said.
According to the meeting agenda, the Public Works Committee considered recommending the board of commissioners to approve a contract to Bowman on a time-and-materials basis in the amount of $27,650 for design, engineering and construction services.
Montgomery Avenue/Mill Road/Surrey Road /Windsor Avenue Intersection Improvement Project
The project is expected to take place this summer and involves an intersection for which a study was done in 2024 regarding removing the traffic lights and replacing with stop signs.
“This project is a reconfiguration of the intersection, including realignment of curb lines, crosswalks, etc. for pedestrian and vehicle safety,” Walter said, noting that the bids are due back next week, so the cost is not known at this time.
According to the meeting agenda, the Public Works Committee considered recommending the board of commissioners to approve a contract to Bowman on a time-and-materials basis up to $23,0000 for construction services.
