The La Salle College High School football team brought home the PIAA state championship on Saturday, the institution announced in a post.
The Explorers defeated District 7 champ Pittsburgh Central Catholic 34-20 at Cumberland Valley High School. They took down North Penn High School 49-14 in their Class 6A semifinal last week at Central Bucks South en route to their third-ever PIAA state final and their first since 2010 when they defeated North Penn 38-35 in the semis.
The Wyndmoor squad finishes the season with a 13-1 overall record, a District 12 championship, and a Catholic League 6A champship.
La Salle College has been coached the last two seasons by Brett Gordon, a Glenside native. His late father, Drew, is a Hall of Famer and former longtime head coach of the program. La Salle won its only other PIAA state football championship in 2009 with Drew as their head coach and Brett as their offensive coordinator.
According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s previous coverage, they are the only father-son duo to win state championships as head coaches in the 36-year history of the PIAA football state playoffs.
