The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia was recently featured in The Philadelphia Business Journal for the potential selling of its four properties in the area, including the Mandell Education Center in Elkins Park.
According to the article, “The nonprofit is in the early stages of conversations with leaseholders to balance their long-term needs with the federation’s goal to shed properties.”
“Jewish Federation does not want to be in the real estate business,” Michael Markman, who is on the Federation’s board of directors, told the Journal. “It’s not necessarily what we should be doing. Maybe historically that’s what leadership has thought in the past, but it’s not what we feel we should be doing right now. Real estate is not our core mission.”
The 28-acre Mandell Education Campus, 7601 Old York Road, includes Gratz College and Perelman Jewish Day School.

“We never intended to be landlords,” Federation CEO Michael Balaban said. “Rather, we’re a nonprofit focused on enriching lives and that’s really what’s at the core of our business.”
The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia’s four campuses are located in Bryn Mawr, Wynnewood, Philadelphia, and Elkins Park.
In 2016, the Federation was considering converting some of the Mandell campus to housing, according to The Jewish Exponent.
