Charli Jones, a recent Cheltenham High School graduate, and Joshua Slade, a recent Jenkintown High School graduate, each received scholarships on behalf of the Cheltenham Area Branch of the NAACP.

Joshua Slade

Slade was a member of Jenkintown High School’s championship-winning football and baseball teams and was named to the SOL Second Team and the All-Academic Team.

He was a member of the Stock Market Club, Student Council, and Microedit Club.

During the summer months, Slade was a counselor for a youth football camp, and the during the fall, he served as a coach for a youth flag football league.

Charli Jones

Jones served as Vice President of CHS’ Class of 2023 and gave the Welcome Address at graduation. She also served as co-President of Up The Octave, CHS’ treble ensemble group.

Jones, a golfer, has been involved with the First Tee of Greater Philadelphia, a youth development organization introducing the game of golf and its inherent values to young people, since she was five years old.

“We’re all so proud of Charli and she represents all we hope our students aspire to be,” The First Tee of Greater Philadephia’s Executive Director Bill Hyndman told The Reporter. “We have watched her grow into not only a great golfer, but a great young lady. I know that Charli, and her teammate, Julian, will represent The First Tee of Greater Philadelphia to the highest degree.”

In July 2022, Jones placed in the ninth annual New York Times Student Editorial Contest. As a student in Megan Hogan’s AP Language and Composition class, Jones’ “Fore- getting Diversity” finished as round four finalists. 

She plans to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C. in the fall.

Slade and Jones were honored on Sunday, June 11 at the 21st annual Freedom Fund Banquet of the Cheltenham Area Branch of the NAACP at Arcadia University.
