Jenkintown Council Shuffle: Two Vacancies to be Advertised

With the announced resignation of Rick Bunker from Ward 3, Jenkintown Borough Council will have two open seats. Tomorrow night’s agenda also lists a motion to advertise the Melissa Ashton-Young’s open seat in Ward 2.

Mr. Bunker’s term ends in 2023 and Ms. Ashton-Young’s term expires January next year.

Curiously, the Council’s agenda for January listed motions to accept Ms. Ashton-Young’s resignation and then to appoint Maxine Marlowe to the Ward 2 seat, but council skipped those items. A motion to appoint Ms. Marlowe does not appear on this month’s agenda.

In the past, Jenkintown Council has used the interview process as a formality, typically appointing registered Democrats active in the local party.

If Council does appoint Ms. Marlowe, anyone hoping for a fresh face on the board will find themselves disappointed. Between 2007 and 2011, Ms. Marlow served on council and as its vice-president.

Council Member Chuck Whitney (Ward 2) has announced on Facebook that he will not seek reelection this year, but that he does plan to serve out his term, inviting the possibility of a primary contest.
