Jenkintown Borough announced today that it has again been named an official Bird Town of Pennsylvania.
The Borough’s designation joins more than 43 Pennsylvania municipalities which have recognized new and invigorated leadership under the Pennsylvania Audubon Council.
“Our municipality is dedicated to furthering our bird-friendly habitat initiatives as a part of our commitment to create a healthier, more sustainable environment for birds, wildlife and our citizens,” the Borough said in a statement. “The Bird Town Pennsylvania program provides tools for us to engage, educate and empower our residents, schools and businesses to make more ecologically friendly decisions and promotes a culture of conservation where everyone can be a steward of nature in their own backyard and beyond.”
To achieve a Bird Town certification, some or all of the following strategy areas must be met:
- Municipal Actions
- School District Actions
- Community Engagement
- Habitat Enhancement
- Collaborations
- Advocacy
The designations are determined by the number of tasks accomplished for each level under the 6 different strategies:
- Green: All new Bird Towns start here
- Bronze: One tasks completed in 4 of the 6 strategies
- Silver : Two tasks completed in 5 of the 6 strategies
- Gold: Three tasks completed in all 6 strategies
“As a symbol of our re-commitment new signs will appear on Jenkintown Roads and at the park. A fresh and bold logo has been created for the program and will help identify our community as one that aims for greater conservation and stewardship of natural resources,” the Borough’s statement said.
The official designation and signage will be presented to Jenkintown Borough by the Bird Town Pennsylvania on Wednesday, July 19 at 7:00pm prior to the Borough Committee meeting. A brief presentation will be given.
