Huntingdon Valley brewery sources barley for PSU craft-brewing program

Double Eagle Malt, a brewery based in Huntingdon Valley, was recently featured by Craft Beer & Brewing for providing barley to the Penn State Berks craft-brewing certificate program.

According to the article, 10 students graduated as the program’s first cohort in December 2023. They created a “Land Grant” beer—a land beer, meaning it’s made with locally grown and harvested ingredients.

“Brewing the ‘Land Grant’ land beer involved an open-fermentation approach. The wort was trans-ferred to an open fermentor, allowing the yeast to express its characteristics more fully. After the initial fermentation, the beer was transferred to a conical fermentor for completion. This process allowed the yeast to be more expressive,” Brian Mills, a student in the craft-brewing certificate program, told Beer & Brewing.
