Humpty’s Dumplings of Glenside has been hosting “Hump Day” on Wednesdays since the Keswick Village eatery launched in 2014.

According to co-owner Phillip Yesenosky, the weekly offer began as a way to spread the word about the product.

“We knew that restaurants tend to be slow mid-week, so we were trying to create a day where people come in to get dumplings. At the time, dollar dumplings rolled off the tongue, and it’s worked out for us,” he said.

More than a decade later, Hump Day has become such a hit that ownership has decided to make some necessary adjustments to the special. The dollar price tag will not change.

“Hump Day has been a local favorite since the jump. We’re now getting tons of first-timers and group orders. It’s gotten to the point where we need to reach a middle ground on packaging and orders,” Yesenosky said. “We don’t want to see our loyal customers getting the short end of the deal.”

Yesenosky said the box sizes are now locked into three, six, and 12 dumplings. To give some relief to the kitchen, ownership is asking parties larger than six to order trays of 30 or 60 dumplings. Those parties can select up to three flavors and Humpty’s will provide the plates, sauces, and napkins.

“We’re just cutting off the other numbers. We’re hoping that’s reasonable and that it makes the experience better for everyone,” he said.

“Essentially, we’re trying to streamline the offer. We’ll see six to seven thousand orders that day, so we want to cut down on errors on our part,” co-owner Pat Doyle said. “It’s become close to a third of our business. Year after year, Wednesday has essentially doubled. It’s been an interesting experiment. Trying to keep it alive has been important to us since prices have increased dramatically since we opened.”

Humpty’s Dumplings will be offering $1 dumplings as part of Glenside Lunch Week, which takes places from July 26 through August 1. In 2024, their 10-year celebration coincided with their 10 millionth dumpling.

“We wanted to do a weeklong dollar dumpling offer, but our machine broke,” Yesenosky said. “Lunch Week seemed like an ideal opportunity to try it again.”
