In July 2013, former Cheltenham High School principal Mr. Joseph W. Rodgers passed away at the age of 64. A public memorial service for Mr. Rodgers was held on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the high school.
According to local historian Chuck Langerman, Mr. Rodgers spent 33 years in the Cheltenham Township School District, beginning as a social studies teacher at CHS in 1971. He went on to serve as a housemaster and assistant principal before becoming the high school principal in 1988.
“Mr. Rodgers guided CHS into the new century and helped make Cheltenham High a special place for both students and staff. He was an influential person in the lives of many students, leading with great style, integrity and class,” Chuck said.
Before his retirement in June 2004, members of the community, faculty, student body, and alumni arranged to have the CHS library named the “Joseph W. Rodgers Library” in his honor. In 2019, two years after closing for remediation and renovation, the library was reborn as the Joseph W. Rodgers Culture and Resource Center (CRC):
