History with Chuck: Remembering CHS Class of ’27 football great Leon Whittock

Leon Whittock, a 1927 Cheltenham High School graduate, is considered one of the first great football players in the program’s history.

According to local historian Chuck Langerman, Whittock ran, passed, and kicked the Panthers to a 36-7 victory over Abington on Thanksgiving Day, 1926, before an estimated overflow crowd of 10,000 at the Church Road football field in Elkins Park.

He went on to Temple University where he played football under legendary coach Pop Warner. His junior season, he led the Owls to an 8-1-1 record, and his senior season Leon was named Honorable Mention All-American and was picked to participate in the North-South Football Classic.

The Glenside native was also an outstanding baseball player at Temple, leading the Owls in batting in 1932 as a left-handed catcher.

In 1971, Leon Whittock was inducted into the Temple University Sports Hall of Fame.
