Local historian Chuck Langerman shared that on May 29, 1970, golf legend Arnold Palmer played a benefit event at the now-defunct Ashbourne Country Club in Cheltenham Township.
According to Langerman, Palmer played in a foursome with television personality Mike Douglas, former Philadelphia Eagle Tom Brookshier, and comedian Dick Shawn. He shot a four-under-par 33-33—66 on the 6,313-yard par 34-36—70 course.
Attendance at the exhibition was limited, and tickets were priced at $100.
The private, 18-hole course at Ashbourne Road and Oak Lane Road closed for good in 2008.
