High school sports roundup: LSCHS takes 8th-straight PCL title plus district title, trip to states | CHS to play ASHS in SOL flag football 2nd round | Upper Moreland, Springfield LAX lose in districts

The La Salle College High School boys’ lacrosse team took home their eighth consecutive Pennsylvania Catholic League title after defeating St. Joseph’s Prep 11-3 in the PCL’s championship game.

With the win, the Explorers also capture the District 12 AAA title and a berth in the PIAA State Tournament that begins June 4.

In related La Salle news, Bobby Franklin, Will Palopoli, and Gavin Muller medaled at the District 12 3A and PCL championships.

Franklin, a freshman, took home two gold medals in the 1,600-meter run (4:21.27) at districts and the mile run (4:21.26) at the PCL championships.

Palopoli, a senior, won the boys 3,200-meter run at both the District 12 and PCL championships, running a season-best 9:26.98 at districts. 

Muller took first place in the boys’ discus at both the PCL and District 12 championships and finished third in the PCL high jump and shot put.

Abington Senior High School’s Luke Coleman took third in the 400-meter run with a time of 48.84 at the District One 3A championships.

Cheltenham High School girls’ flag football


The Lady Panthers extended their win streak by defeating Central Bucks East 13-0 in the first round of the Suburban One League playoffs on Wednesday.

They are now 8-1 on the season.

“Our biggest success this season has been going from being dead last in everything last season, not winning a game, to being the top scoring offense in the league, third-ranked defense in the league, and being the No. 2 team in the league at the end of SOL league play,” said coach DJ McFadden.

Junior quarterback Jiah Price has racked up 1,300 yards and 37 touchdowns this season, sophomore running back Paige Powell has 30 carries for 400 yards, sophomore Maya Simmons has 35 receptions for 550 yards and nine touchdowns, senior Tabitha Sterman has three interceptions, 45 flag pulls, two pass deflections, and 20 catches for 200 yards and four touchdowns, and seniors Amelia Kopp and Arianna Davis have combined for 85 catches for 800 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The Panthers will take on Abington Senior High School in the second round on Tuesday, May 3 at 3:30pm in Wyncote.

Upper Moreland girls’ lacrosse

The Upper Moreland High School girls’ lacrosse team lost to Bishop Shanahan by a score of 8-7 in the District 1 AA semifinals.

According to PhillyLacrosse.com, Annalise Messina tallied three goals, one assist, and five draw controls in the game. Molly Meakim added two goals and two assists, Olivia Meakim one goal, two assists, and Keira Hess recorded one goal. Keeper Addi Hurley racked up 11 saves in the game.

Springfield Township girls’ lacrosse

Springfield Township High School was taken out by Villa Maria Academy in a 6-5 overtime District 1 AA semifinal game.

According to PhillyLacrosse.com, Fiona Rizzo recorded three goals, Emma Yoder one goal, and keeper Tess Talbot had 12 saves for the Spartans.
