The Hatboro and Lower Moreland police departments highlighted today an uptick in Kia and Hyundai thefts.
According to the notice, Kia and Hyundai models built before 2023 lack “engine immobilizers”—electronic security devices that prevent the engine from starting unless the correct key or key fob is in use.
These vehicles were targeted in recent years by thieves amid a social media trend called the ‘Kia Boys’ or ‘Kia Hyundai Thefts.’
“Kia and Hyundai car thefts have been a problem for the past couple of years. … The lack of security allows thieves to easily steal certain Kia and Hyundai models and has been one of the largest contributors to the number of stolen cars statewide and nationwide,” the notice said, noting that dealerships will check and install the device for free.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles were among the commonly stolen vehicles in Pennsylvania last year.
