The Holocaust Awareness Museum and Education Center (HAMEC) in Elkins Park has dedicated The Archives for Holocaust Education to Donald Wittenberg, a longtime educator who passed away in March.

Wittenberg graduated from Olney High School in 1964 and attended Temple University, where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education in 1969. He went on serve numerous roles for the School District of Philadelphia.

Following his retirement, Wittenberg served as a curator of HAMEC where he helped collect and document artifacts and assist with museum displays.

The archives include historical artifacts and educational materials. HAMEC held a dedication ceremony on Sunday, August 2.

Board President Chuck Feldman told The Philadelphia Inquirer that “with Wittenberg’s guidance, the museum and its educational programs have reached 400,000 young people in Pennsylvania and beyond.”

According to the Jewish Exponent, relatives on Wittenberg’s father’s side were killed during the Holocaust, and his father served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
