Governor Shapiro instructs State Police to investigate drone activity, lost drone turned in to Hatboro police

Numerous residents of greater Glenside and surrounding areas have reported sightings of “mysterious drones” flying through the sky.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said yesterday that there are no known threats or nefarious activity, and that some of the sightings have been confirmed to be small aircraft, WFMZ reported.

“People are reporting sightings of drones. It is very common for individuals who think they see drones to actually see small aircraft and we have a case of mistaken identity,” said Mayorkas.

New Jersey State Senator Doug Steinhardt said State Police have dispatched helicopters to try to interact with reported drones.

“Only to when they approach them turn off their lights and disappear, unable to track them, unable to detect their signal, not knowing where they come from or where are they going to and quite frankly not the behavior of any legal commercially friendly or any non-militarily asset,” said Senator Steinhardt.

Governor Josh Shapiro has instructed State Police to look into drone activity and to put helicopters in the air to investigate reports, WFMZ said.

CBS Philadelphia reported that the White House is also saying there is no evidence at this time the drone sightings across the Delaware Valley pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.

In related news, the Hatboro Police Department announced that a resident found a drone on the ground in their backyard in the 400 block of Madison Avenue on Saturday, December 14.

The resident turned the drone over to police in case a child or anyone had lost it. Police said the drone is “NOT suspicious in nature” and determined to be a beginner drone. It appears to work properly, the report said.

If it is yours, you can call Hatboro police at (215) 675-2832 and request to speak with Detective Sgt. Dilks to identify the drone.
