Governor Josh Shapiro has accepted an invitation to publicly debate State Treasurer and GOP challenger Stacy Garrity, PennLive reported today.

“The Shapiro for Pennsylvania campaign has accepted an invitation from ABC27 News for a gubernatorial debate. We look forward to continuing to make the choice in this election clear,” Shapiro’s campaign communications director said.

If Garrity accepts, the gubernatorial debate would be hosted and televised by ABC27. A date has not been announced.

Garrity’s campaign announced last week that she would participate in a televised debate hosted by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry in October, and that she has accepted an invitation to debate at KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh. Shapiro has not said whether he will take part in those events, PennLive said.

In June, Garrity called for seven debates with Shapiro.

“Pennsylvania is at a crossroads and, as I say in every speech, we need to decide what type of state we want to be. Public debates will give the voters of Pennsylvania the opportunity to make this decision with the most information possible,” Garrity said in a statement.

Both candidates ran opposed in May. A potential 2028 presidential candidate, Shapiro is considered a heavy favorite. The most recent Franklin & Marshall poll has Shapiro leading with 50% to Garrity’s 25%.
