The Raymond family of Glenside will compete for a $10,000 grand prize on the adventure-oriented television show “Survivalists” this Sunday.
The show, now in its third season, features families taking a three-day trek across rugged terrain. The families have to use teamwork, communication and survival skills to finish.
“We were sleeping in tents, we had only the water that we carried. We had no communication with the outside world,” mother Angela Raymond said. “That allowed us to avoid distractions. It was a really good experience.”
The Raymonds will be facing off against the Trop family from Albany, New York.
“We’re striving to make adjustments within our family about things we may have issues with. Our issue was our communication, so we’re trying to build that up between us,” Angela said.
The journey began when Angela noticed an advertisement on behalf of KidsCasting in December of 2021. She sat down with her husband Fritgerald and six kids to talk it over.
“We sat down as a family to find out who would like to complete the task. Our sons Christopher, Aidan, and Davidson were up for it. Once I showed them what we needed to respond to, Christopher took over from there to finish the application,” she said.
The family was contacted in early 2022 as a heads-up that their application was received, and that they’d been invited to appear in an episode.
“My husband and I were happy. Our kids were a little less enthusiastic,” she said with a laugh. “Their response was, ‘Mom, why are you always signing us up for stuff?'”
