Former Cheltenham High School principal named new superintendent of the Bethlehem Area School District

Dr. Renato M. Lajara, former principal of Cheltenham High School (2019—2022), has been hired as the new superintendent for the Bethlehem Area School District, pending school board approval.

A former Jenkintown resident and a native of the Dominican Republic, Dr. Lajara came to Cheltenham as the district’s director of elementary education in 2017. In 2019, he lent transitional support as the interim principal at Myers Elementary School, and later served as the interim high school principal before being appointed principal of Cheltenham High School.

He is currently serving as assistant superintendent for Network 8 in the School District of Philadelphia.

“Dr. Lajara is an accomplished educational leader and dedicated student advocate known for his ethical, equitable, and student-centered approach to leadership,” Bethlehem Area School District’s announcement said. “He brings more than two decades of experience in public education, with a proven record of driving change and improving outcomes for students in diverse and complex school systems.”

renowned for its cultural vibrancy, rich educational traditions, and deep-rooted pride,” Dr. Lajara said in a statement. “A school district thrives when it operates as a true partnership.
