106 S. Easton Road in Glenside, vacated since December 2022 when an interior pipe burst, will soon reopen as the Whiskey Road.
Signage for the now-defunct Franklin’s Pub came down in July. In late August, we reported that a “Help Wanted” sign appeared in the building’s window.
A second “Help Wanted” sign followed last week, this time with a phone number.
Whiskey Road’s kitchen manager, Ted (who preferred to withhold his last name), told Glenside Local that a hiring event will be held on location from 10:00am – 2:00pm on Saturday, September 7. The forthcoming eatery/bar will be taking applications for open positions that day.
According to Ted, a liquor license is in hand and a health department inspection on Tuesday, September 10 is all that stands in the way of a grand opening.
“We’re going through the same health department guy that closed the place down a year and a half ago,” he said. “We know everything we have to do in that building. It’s turning around. We already did all of our renovations. We fixed the pipe, we changed the colors on the wall, cleaned everything up.”
However, Henry Sekawungu, Cheltenham Township’s Director of Zoning and Planning, told us that he has yet to receive anything from ownership, and that at minimum Whiskey Road will need to go through the township’s Building Department for signage approval.
“Businesses sometimes get held up if they don’t go through the proper process. It’s not a change in use, but if they need signage, they need a Certificate of Appropriateness that’s granted for any property that’s adding signage in that district,” Sekawungu said. “That’s approved by the Design Review Committee.”
In the meantime, greater Glenside can look forward to a new spot that aims to resemble the Blue Comet’s heyday.
“We’re going to try to follow the Blue Comet’s system. They had a DJ on Sundays, a band on Saturday, open mic night on Thursdays,” Ted said. “Something along those lines. We’re trying to target an afternoon lunch from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. The backyard will still be the same as it was. I’m planning to bring barbecue ribs, brisket, and chicken into that neighborhood. Everything will be homemade.”
A Facebook page and a website are forthcoming. We will be in touch as we learn more.
