Five greater Glenside municipalities awarded Montco 2040 Implementation Grants

Montgomery County announced today that Abington Township, Cheltenham Township, Rockledge Borough, Springfield Township and Upper Dublin Township have been awarded grants for various projects as part of the 2026 cycle of the Montco 2040 Implementation Grants.

The grants are as follows:

Abington Township: Briar Bush Nature Center Invasive Plant Management and Restoration Project

  • Amount Awarded: $132,000

This project will implement the recommendations of the township’s Invasive Plants Management Plan at Briar Bush Nature Center (BBNC). It will replace invasive plants with desirable native trees and plants to restore the forest on over 11 acres of green space in a dense neighborhood. One of the few nature centers in the region, BBNC is an important ecosystem for native birds and animals and a beloved educational and environmental space for residents and guests. This project will ensure the Center’s landscape and woodlands continue to serve the community for decades to come.

Cheltenham Township: Wesley Plaza Protective Streetscape Initiative

  • Amount Awarded: $48,800

Cheltenham Township plans to install permanent bollards, benches, planters, and decorative banners at Wesley Plaza between Easton Road and Bickley Road to create a safer and more welcoming streetscape. These elements will serve as attractive, built-in barriers that protect pedestrians and event attendees without relying on heavy municipal vehicles.

Rockledge Borough: Jarrett Playground Community Building

  • Amount Awarded: $ 250,000

Rockledge Borough will construct an ADA-accessible community building on the grounds of Jarrett Playground. The project includes restrooms, a community/meeting room, a storage room, a kitchenette, an outdoor pavilion, a movie screen, and a stage. The borough currently has no dedicated community building, and it plans for this building to host many community events as well as the Borough’s children’s summer camp.

Springfield Township: Municipal Campus Buildings Solar Installation

  • Amount Awarded: $ 250,000

Springfield Township will install photovoltaic panels on the roofs of three municipal buildings. The combined system is expected to produce 450,300 kWh of energy. Excess energy generated will offset usage from the Springfield Township library, lowering the greenhouse gas emissions of both the municipal campus and the library. The township will use this project to get closer to its goal of transitioning its buildings and vehicles to 100 percent clean energy by 2050, as well as to stabilize operating costs and improve resiliency.

Upper Dublin Township: Dreshertown Road Cross County Trail Extension

  • Amount Awarded: $100,000

Upper Dublin Township will extend the Cross County Trail (CCT) along Virginia Drive and Dreshertown Road (SR 2024) and widen the road from Susquehanna Road (SR 2017) to the Beacon Hill Road/Bantry Drive signalized intersection. The project will connect to adjacent sections of the CCT in the Greater Fort Washington District and result in approximately 3.2 miles of CCT through Upper Dublin Township to the Fort Washington SEPTA Regional Train Station on Pennsylvania Avenue.
