The East Cheltenham and La Mott libraries, each part of the Cheltenham Township Library System (CTLS), will open again for the season on Tuesday, May 28.
Both libraries have seen annual closures since 2020 as the township works to mitigate ongoing problems with their aging facilities.
During the pandemic, the township was forced to close down its community centers, within which the CTLS shares space. In June 2021, officials learned that boilers in both buildings—the La Mott Community Center and the Rowland Community Center, which houses the East Cheltenham Library—had been decertified.
Since then, the libraries have closed in October and reopened around Memorial Day.
Mary Kay Moran, CTLS’ Executive Director, is hoping the seasonal closures come to an end soon.
“We’re pretty excited to have our branches open again so we can be back for the summer,” she said. “We have our summer reading programs starting on June 6 and we have programs scheduled at all four of our libraries.”
Moran wants to collaborate with La Mott’s summer camps as the renovation process moves forward.
“My understanding is that the township is going to host a late June meeting regarding what they want the community center to be. There may be some other renovations in store for the La Mott Community Center, and we’re going to try to be a part of that design process,” she said.
The libraries’ hours going forward are below. More information on the CTLS can be found in their website.
