Kate Boyce, who has organized the Red Cross blood drive at St Peter’s Episcopal Church in Glenside since 1999, has nominated the Glenside Pub, Sprinkles Ice Cream Shoppe (Elkins Park), and Giuliano’s Deli for a Glenside Local community spotlight.
Boyce said each business has generously donated year after year to her annual “Give a Pint, Get a Pint” blood drive, through which donors receive pints of goodies as expressions of gratitude. Glenside Pub donates a pint of beer, Sprinkles Ice Cream a scoop of ice cream, and Giuliano’s a cup of soup. This year, Nothing Bundt Cakes of Abington is donating their signature “Bundtinis” as a special gift to first time donors.
Past donors include Rita’s Water Ice, Senor Salsa, Humpty’s Dumplings, Wawa, Roman Delight, and Keswick Coffee. Now-defunct businesses that have donated include Peas in a Pod, Keswick Tavern, and the Donut Connection, according to Boyce.
“Those pints are donated by some amazing local businesses. Some of them have done this for literally decades,” Boyce said. “The Glenside Pub has been donating beer since [current owner] Ryan’s parents, both now deceased, were the owners of the pub. Rita’s Water Ice was my very first ‘Thank you pint’.”
The annual drive will be held this year on Saturday, February 8 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.
“My second shout out has to be to true heroes who roll up their sleeves and make those critical donations that keep a safe blood supply available for our neighbors in need. They are the definition of awesome,” Boyce said.
All appointments for the upcoming drive are currently full, but donators are welcome to find another site to donate at https://www.redcross.org/give-blood.html, Boyce said.
