Cheltenham Township swears in 3 new officers, Carl Haering receives Community Service Award

The Cheltenham Township Police Department swore in officers Patrick Miller, Eric Mercer and Lee Thompson during a July 19 Board of Commissioners meeting in Curtis Hall.

Officer Miller, a graduate of Bloomsburg University, has served in the U.S. Marine Corps and served the New Orleans Police Department for four years.

Officer Thompson served as a police officer in State College for six years and is a graduate of Penn State University.

Officer Mercer, an East Carolina University graduate, previously served as a supervisor at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.

“These individuals have been referred to as the cream of the crop, and they are joining a police department that is second-to-none. You are doing a great job, and I want the three new officers to know of the high regard and high caliber of the department which they are joining,” Commissioner Daniel Norris said.

Carl Haering, a customer service representative for Humphrey’s Pest Control in Glenside, was presented with a Community Service Award during the meeting “for actions going above and beyond for the Glenside community.”

“During his commute when he parks his car and walks to this place of business, he picks up trash along the way. He does this every day. One of our residents in Glenside has witnessed his quiet contribution to our neighborhood and brought it to our attention. This Township is proud to honor Mr. Haering for his work,” Commissioner Matt Areman said.

“I’ll continue to do it. I’ve been doing it for 16 years and I plan to keep going,” Haering said.

Each action can be viewed in the Township’s recording of Wednesday’s meeting:
