Cheltenham Township reaches ‘settlement agreement’ regarding former Old York Road Skating Club in Elkins Park

The Cheltenham Township Zoning Hearing Board agenda for Monday, November 13 includes a “proposed Settlement Agreement for 8116 Church Road York Road,” also known as the Old York Road Skating Club in Elkins Park.

A commissioner told Glenside Local that details are unavailable until after tomorrow’s hearing, but that “the negotiations were difficult and extended for both parties and things ‘came apart’ twice before they appear to have reached something of a consensus.”

The commissioner also noted the challenges of trying to return a “difficult to develop” parcel to a more respectable taxable status.

The property has been up for sale since 2021. In December 2022, York Road Realty Co., L.P. proposed the site’s demolition. In the rink’s place, the firm plans to construct a multi-use self-storage facility with retail spaces on the first floor and an indoor/outdoor recreational area with four pickleball courts.

Commissioners voted “No Action” on a plan at the February 2023 Building and Zoning Committee Meeting.

The property has been vacant for more than seven years. For a brief history of the club and the facility, you can click here.

We will have more details about the settlement agreement soon.

The continuance for Lukoil’s proposed smoke shop at 105 Greenwood Avenue in Wyncote will be heard on Monday as well. The lessee’s request was voted down by Cheltenham Township’s Building and Zoning Committee in early October.

In related news, the Township has released a document titled “Facilities Frequently Asked Questions” which includes responses to recurring public inquiries received since the Facilities Study began.
