Cheltenham Township moves forward with plans for Knight’s Personal Fitness, daycare proposal denied

Cheltenham Township will move forward with plans for a personal training studio at the former Bike Works at 25 S Easton Road in Glenside.

The application, which was submitted by Tommie Knight, owner/trainer at Knight’s Personal Fitness in Elkins Park, was recommended for approval during the Township’s Building and Zoning Committee meeting on Wednesday, October 4.

“A month or so ago there was an approval for a cigar lounge which already exists off of Mt. Carmel Avenue in Abington,” Director of Zoning, Henry Sekawungu, said. “They were looking to relocate into that space, but during the process, the owner decided to change his mind and go with Tommie Knight.”

In 2015, Knight was featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer for his then-new gym in East Falls, Philadelphia.

“I think he would be a very positive addition to the community. I support him bringing his business into Glenside,” commissioner Matt Areman said during the meeting. “Let’s work together to bring businesses like this in.”

Knight’s proposal will come before the Township’s Zoning Hearing Board on Monday, October 16 at Curtis Hall, at which time the applicant will make his case for permitted use of the location. The Board will rule to approve or deny.

In related business, a proposed daycare center at 136 S. Easton Road was turned down by the Committee.

“The daycare was turned down because they’re concerned about having a daycare in the downtown,” Sekawungu said. “It isn’t thought to be an ideal location for 2-5 year olds.”
