Cheltenham superintendent provides update on the high school football program’s hazing investigation

Dr. Brian W. Scriven, superintendent of the Cheltenham School District, issued an update to the community today regarding the cancellation of the Cheltenham High School football season.

The season’s early conclusion was announced on October 20 following an initial investigation into alleged hazing within the program. According to that notice, the district received a claim in late September that a student was assaulted in the football team’s locker room.

“Since that time, the district has been working diligently and carefully to ensure these matters are addressed with the seriousness, fairness, and thoroughness they deserve,” Dr. Scriven wrote today. “Our internal investigations are now nearing completion, and we are currently awaiting the formal findings and recommendations from the independent investigators who have been assisting us throughout this process.”

The Cheltenham Township Police Department is conducting its own investigation, Dr. Scriven said.

“We recognize the impact this situation has had on our students, families, staff, and the broader community. Please know that our foremost priority remains the safety, well-being, and dignity of every student in the Cheltenham School District,” he wrote.

The notice concludes by saying that the next steps for the affected students and the program “are currently under advisement. These decisions will depend on the outcomes of the ongoing investigations and will be guided by our commitment to accountability, restorative practices, and the values of respect and integrity that define our district.”

More to come.
