Eastern Center for Arts & Technology in Willow Grove recently named Cheltenham High School senior Chaiyah Levy the May 2023 Student of the Month for her work in the Allied Health program.

The monthly award is given to ten students each year, and is sponsored by Eastern’s faculty, Joint Operating Committee, and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success, and service.

Chaiyah knew that she enjoyed helping people and decided to focus on learning more about a career in nursing during the pandemic. “People needed help, and nurses were at the front lines caring for patients in such an uncertain time,” said Chaiyah. She heard about the Allied Health program through a presentation at her high school, and she felt as though Allied Health would be a good opportunity for her to explore the possibility of a career in nursing, and to find out if this was something she wanted to do with her career.

At EASTERN, Chaiyah is a top student, inquisitive, engaged in class, and always willing to help others. Through the Allied Health program, Chaiyah is certified in Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR/AED), and Naloxone Administration to prevent opioid overdose. She received first place in the SkillsUSA District Competition for Customer Service and recently competed at the state level. She excelled in the Allied Health Medical Terminology dual enrollment course in partnership with Montgomery County Community College and has earned three college credits. At Cheltenham High School, she is an honor roll student, and she participates in the Black Scholars program, the Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) Leadership Team, and is a Cheerleader.

“Chaiyah is very supportive and inclusive of others and listens intently to the contributions of her peers,” said Ms. Allison Latzo, EASTERN’s Allied Health instructor. “She is a student leader and consistently displays her professionalism.”

After EASTERN and Cheltenham High School, Chaiyah plans to attend Montgomery County Community College for two years, and then transfer to Howard University or Duquesne University to complete her Nursing degree. She also plans to continue her education further to earn her master’s degree.
