Cheltenham schools adopt resolution which addresses federal immigration law enforcement on school grounds

The Cheltenham School District Board of School Directors adopted a resolution for school safety protocols earlier this month.

Titled “Welcoming Schools Resolution & Safe Zones Policy”, the resolution addresses federal immigration law enforcement on school grounds. It states that the district “has a responsibility to ensure that all students, regardless of immigration status who reside within its boundaries, can safely access a free public K-12 education”. It notes that the district “does not inquire into the immigration status of any student” and “recognizes that its duty to uphold students’ rights, including their Fourth Amendment
rights against unreasonable searches and seizures and Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination”.

“It is the policy of the Cheltenham School District not to allow an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (‘ICE’) agent or other person engaged in immigration enforcement to enter non-public areas of a school, school property, or a school-sponsored event, without a judicial warrant and to ensure that educational settings are not disrupted,” the resolution says.

In October 2025, Cheltenham Township unveiled a “welcome policy” relating to immigrant rights in the township.
