Jayla Martin, a Cheltenham High School junior and a student of cosmetology at the Eastern Center for Arts and Technology in Willow Grove, has been highlighted in a Black History Month Student Spotlight.
From the spotlight:
For Jayla, Black History Month is a powerful opportunity to honor the groundbreaking achievements of African American leaders who have shattered barriers and paved the way for her and the people she holds dearest. It’s a time to reflect on their resilience, celebrate their impact, and draw inspiration from their legacy.
When Jayla was just 11 years old, her mom taught her the basics of braiding. From there, she began watching YouTube tutorials to learn a variety of braiding techniques. “It started as a hobby,” Jayla shared. “As I got older, I began to take it more seriously and decided to pursue Cosmetology as my career. Right now, I focus on braids, wigs, and extensions, but I’m always eager to continue learning and improving my skills.”
Jayla finds inspiration in her own goals and future aspirations. “I know that many people my age dream of becoming entrepreneurs, but what really matters is following through,” she explained. “I have a clear career path that I’m determined to pursue. I’m not someone who just talks about their goals—I’m someone who takes action to achieve them.”
Jayla values the education she receives at EASTERN and the experience of working in a real-world environment. “The atmosphere is very professional,” Jayla shared. “It’s an incredible opportunity. If you’re unsure about your career path, EASTERN offers so many options. Every program provides industry-standard certifications, and I’ll graduate with my Cosmetology license.”
After completing the Cosmetology program and earning her license, Jayla plans to attend college to study business, with the goal of opening her own salon in the future. She will start touring colleges during spring break.
