Joshua McHugh, a Glenside resident and 2008 graduate of Cheltenham High School, is debuting his new orchestral video game music show titled “New Game” on Monday, November 17 at 8:00pm at Or Hadash synagogue (190 Camp Hill Road, Fort Washington).
The show will be performed by the Greater Philadelphia Gamer Symphony Orchestra and features themes from classic video games including “The Legend of Zelda,” “Kirby,” and “Final Fantasy.” McHugh will sing and co-direct the musical as well as oversee roughly 45 musicians and a few non-performer members who support operations.
“It’s an underappreciated art. Most people I’ve mentioned this to go ‘Video game music? You mean, like Mario?’,” McHugh said. “I want to bring this art form closer to the forefront of people’s mind. I’ve always loved the music of video games, and how it compliments both story and gameplay. Much like with movie soundtracks, oftentimes the soundscape that accompanies a cutscene, a puzzle, a challenge or race, completes the work as a whole.”
Following his days in Wyncote, McHugh graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor’s of Music degree in music education. In 2023, he performed in “Hidden: The Musical“, the story of a Jenkintown resident and Holocaust survivor. He is currently a systems analyst for the School District of Springfield Township.
