Bridge construction in Cheltenham to begin April 8, segment of Ashbourne Road to close until August

PennDOT announced that construction will begin on the Ashbourne Road bridge in Cheltenham Township as of Monday, April 8.

Crews are expected to be on site until early August. During that time, Ashbourne Road will be closed between Old York Road and Park Avenue.

During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Mountain Avenue, Union Avenue, Montgomery Avenue, Ashbourne Road, New Second Street, Church Road, and Route 611 (Old York Road).

In addition, pedestrians will be detoured across Park Avenue, Elkins Avenue, Spring Avenue, and Route 611 (Old York Avenue).

The project intends to rehabilitate the bridge and replace six culverts to maintain safe and efficient crossings. From PennDOT:

The bridge carrying Ashbourne Road (Route 2025) over a branch of the Tookany Creek in Cheltenham Township is one of seven structures in Bridge Group P (MPMS 102320). The bridge is a brick arch single-span structure that was constructed in 1910. The rehabilitation includes the removal of earthen fill over the arch, reconstruction of spandrel walls, wing walls, and arch barrel ring stones as needed, reconstruction of parapet walls with concrete walls with stone facing, cleaning and repointing of walls, parapets, substructure units, and brick arch barrel, and utilities will be relocated into a utility bay section over the arch-topped full depth pavement. The improvements to this bridge will strengthen and restore the structure to good condition while having minimal impact on the bridge’s appearance and aesthetic. Construction staging and access will be from the roadway and from temporary construction easements. All traffic will be detoured during construction.

PennDOT’s contractor will rehabilitate the brick arch, single-span bridge with reconstruction of spandrel walls, wing walls, and parapets with concrete stone facing walls.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Built in 1910, the Ashbourne Road bridge is 38 feet wide and carries an average of 1,609 vehicles a day, PennDOT said.

Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, is the general contractor on the project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
