Abington SPCA closed today, possibly due to black mold outbreak

Demand Change at Montgomery County SPCA – PA, a recently launched Facebook page, claims that an employee from the Abington facility at 1006 Edge Hill Road informed them “that all of the animals at this shelter have been transported to the Conshohocken location due to a black mold infestation throughout the building that has existed for years. The mold was most prevalent in the clinic.”

Their post additionally claims that the facility has been temporarily closed. Glenside Local contacted the facility by phone at 1:00pm today during their regular hours. An automated response said that the facility is closed today, but did not say for how long.

We reached out to their operations manager, shelter manager, and interim executive director yesterday and have not received a response.

Today we left a message with Montco SPCA’s public relations official.

We will update this article if we learn more and/or are contacted by any of the above parties. All three of the Montco SPCA’s facilities have come under fire this fall following a lengthy review by the Philadelphia Inquirer titled “Euthanasia, understaffing, and broken kennels are rampant at Montco’s ultra-wealthy SPCA“. You can read our previous coverage of the issue here.
