Abington native Bill Smith, who has been with Mustache Bill’s since he was a teenager, has kicked off the last of his diner’s Memorial Day weekends.
Smith bought the diner in 1972 and worked it into a Jersey shore staple noted by the James Beard Foundation and Guy Fieri, among others.
According to the James Beard award citation, diner food “is all too often of poor to middling quality. But not at Mustache Bill’s. For over 35 years, owner Bill Smith has made everything from scratch — refusing to buy anything premade. It’s the homemade, straight from the heart cooking that makes Mustache Bill’s a must-stop destination on the Jersey Shore.”
“It’s been 52 years. I’m getting to the point where it’s a physical challenge with the volume we do and the standard we impose on ourselves,” Smith told The Sandpaper.
The corner property at Eighth Street and Broadway is selling for $3.65 million.
