Matt Kaplan, an Abington Township resident and owner of M. Kaplan Interiors in East Whiteland (Chester County), was sentenced last week to six to 23 months in prison for defrauding at least a dozen customers, including seniors, 6ABC News reported.
He also received 6 years’ probation and an order to pay restitution to 37 victims in the case in the amount of $530,203 after pleading guilty in September to deceptive business practices, theft and bad checks. Initial charges were filed against Kaplan in March 2023. More charges were filed in 2024.
Customers told 6ABC they never received some or all of the furniture they paid for. According to the Delco Times, 37 victims were identified in the case. The amounts lost by the alleged victims spanned $750 and $45,985 per person.
His wife, Margaret Kaplan, 59, has been charged with multiple counts of deceptive business practices, theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, theft by false impression, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.
M. Kaplan Interiors, a now-closed multi-generational high-end furniture store, opened in 1922 in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Philadelphia.
