Single bullet found in Cheltenham High School boys’ restroom, police investigating

Dr. Brian W. Scriven, superintendent of the Cheltenham School District, sent a notice to the community regarding a single unspent .45 caliber bullet found in a boys’ restroom at the high school at approximately 1:03pm today.

According to the notice, a safety officer found the bullet in the restroom next to the cafeteria. The Cheltenham Township Police Department was notified and arrived on the scene.

“Principal Dr. Benjamin Hammond put the school in a hold, which limits student movement throughout the building,” Dr. Scriven wrote. “Hallway surveillance video was utilized and the students in the bathroom were collected and searched, as were their lockers.”

Though no handgun was present, a five-inch hunting knife was found in a student’s possession and was confiscated.

“Discipline will be carried out in accordance with CSD policy,” Dr. Scriven wrote.

The district turned the investigation over to Cheltenham police, Dr. Scriven said in the notice.
