Abington grad, Willow Grove native and WWII veteran celebrates 100th birthday

Benjamin Berry, a Willow Grove native, Abington High School graduate, and World War II veteran, is celebrating his 100th birthday on Thursday, September 21.

Berry was drafted into the U.S. Army at 19, just after he graduated from Abington.

According to CBS News, his senior living apartment in Germantown displays a photograph of his World War II brothers and a map of the Battle of the Bulge.

“When I joined the veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, there were 33 members,” Berry said. “Today, there are only two. Myself and another fellow, Jake Rizzo. He’s 98 at the present time.”

Berry and his late wife, Lois, were married for more than 50 years and they have four children. In 2021, The Chestnut Hill Local interviewed Berry for a story, and last year, 6ABC featured the veteran in a piece on Aces Museum in Philadelphia.
