Commissioner Spiegelman’s post also noted that there will soon be a coordinated effort to help SPS Technologies workers displaced by this week’s disaster.
“The loss that they’ve suffered is profound: Their jobs and livelihoods, of course, but also the special nature of the company for which they work, which has been a fixture in our Township since 1903, three years BEFORE Abington even became a PA Township of the First Class,” Spiegelman wrote.
Weldon Fire Company officials issued a similar statement yesterday.
“Their employees are part of our community and consist of our friends, family and neighbors. SPS has been a staple in Glenside more than a century,” the company said. “There are of generations of local families that have been employed by SPS for decades. Please continue to support these folks in any way possible. This event has devastated not only them but their families as well.”
They also thanked the Highland Restaurant and Bar for providing First Responders “with meals, bathroom facilities, and a warm place during these frigid temperatures. We cannot put into words our true appreciation for their hospitality. They are the definition of community.”
Representative Madeleine Dean and Montgomery County commissioners are pushing for financial resources to help SPS Technologies rebuild its factory due to its importance to the local economy. A planned partial demolition is in the works.
In related news, the Glenside St. Patrick’s Day Association, organizers of the inaugural St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival, have adjusted the parade’s route due to the incident.
