The Cheltenham Township Police Department announced today that the coyote recently put down by police has tested positive for rabies.

The coyote was shot and killed on Saturday after it attacked a person and their dog at the Curtis Dog Park. The animal had also been spotted along Hopeland Road, Washington Lane and Rock Creek Drive.

“If you or your pet had recent contact with any coyote, please seek medical or veterinary care promptly,” the department said in a post. “Pets that are not current on their rabies vaccination are at especially high risk.”

Police noted that rabies can be transmitted through contact with an infected animal’s saliva, including through bites or scratches.

If you suspect human exposure, you are advised to contact your primary care physician immediately. If you want more information, you can contact the PA Department of Health at 877-PA-HEALTH (877-724-3258).

“We will continue to work closely with the Pennsylvania Game Commission on monitoring the area,” the department said.
