Paige Powell, a senior member of the Cheltenham High School girls’ basketball team, scored her 1,000th career point as the Lady Panthers took down Upper Moreland High School 59-46 on Thursday.
Powell, who is averaging 17 points a game this season, finished the evening with 22 points to bring her career total to 1,010. According to local historian Chuck Langerman, she is the 19th girls’ basketball player in school history to reach the milestone. Senior Maya Simmons, who racked up 18 points and 12 rebounds in the game, reached 1,000 career points last season.
The all-time leading scorer, boys’ or girls’, in Cheltenham High history is current Towson University women’s coach Laura Harper who finished with 2,008 points in 2004.
Powell was named an honorable mention performer for the Suburban One League last season.
Cheltenham will host West Philadelphia in a non-league game on Saturday at 1:30pm, and Upper Moreland will travel to Lower Moreland on Tuesday.
