Rep. Sanchez announces $1.5M in grants to support the Abington-Jenkintown Connections Project

State Representative Ben Sanchez, who serves Rockledge and parts of Abington and Upper Dublin townships, announced today that Abington Township has been awarded $1.5 million in state funding through Pennsylvania’s Multimodal Transportation Fund to support Phase 5 of the Abington-Jenkintown Connections Project.

The Abington-Jenkintown Connections Project is a multi-phase pedestrian and stormwater improvement effort designed to enhance connectivity and infrastructure along Washington Lane, Jenkintown Road, Greenwood Avenue, and Meetinghouse Road. Planning for the project began in August 2017 under the leadership of the Abington Township Board of Commissioners and is being completed in collaboration with Jenkintown Borough.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held in October 2024. Phase 5 will focus on improving the intersection of Jenkintown and Meetinghouse Roads and will advance the following goals:

  • Increased sidewalk connectivity.
  • Improved transit stop accessibility.
  • Enhanced pedestrian safety.
  • Increased intersection safety and traffic operations along Greenwood Avenue, Meetinghouse Road, and Jenkintown Road.

“This funding reflects the importance of coordinated state and local efforts to improve transportation infrastructure,” Sanchez said. “Projects like this benefit drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and local businesses alike.”

“This funding is a clear statement that our neighborhoods matter,” Senator Art Haywood said. “By investing in our district, we are strengthening dignity at the community level and building safer, stronger, and more inclusive places to live, work, and raise a family.”

Abington Township officials highlighted the grants’ long-term benefits for the community.

“I am thrilled that this funding will enable the completion of the last phase of the transformative Abington-Jenkintown Connections Project,” said Abington Commissioner Stuart Winegrad, who chairs the township’s Finance Committee. “We will achieve safer pedestrian access to open spaces, neighborhoods, parks and commercial centers while also improving and enhancing the traffic flow at an essential location in Abington Township.”

“Abington Township extends its gratitude to Rep. Sanchez and Sen. Haywood for their continued advocacy in the General Assembly,” township manager Christopher Christman said. “Their combined efforts in securing this grant enable the township to complete this essential public safety project. By leveraging grant funding, the township can reduce the burden on local taxpayers and direct resources toward other important community needs.”
