Erin Vizza, an Abington Township resident, has created a petition on Change.org which calls on municipal leaders to install a flashing light pedestrian crossing at Easton Road and Fairhill Avenue in the Glenside section of the township.
According to Vizza, the petition will be presented at the Abington Township Board of Commissioners meeting at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 10.
The petition, which has been signed by 291 residents at the time of this writing, claims that local residents “witness close calls almost daily where cars speed up and down Easton Rd., neglecting the safety of pedestrians and even Crossing Guards.” It suggests “the installation of a flashing light pedestrian crossing” to enhance safety.
“Research indicates that pedestrians are more likely to be seen in a flashing light crossing than its non-flashing counterpart,” the petition says. “The crash rate can reduce by as much as 25.2% when these safety measures are installed (source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Imagine how many lives can be potentially saved and injuries prevented with this preventive measure. It’s time to prioritize safety. It’s time for action.”
